While the theater still hopes to be able to stage “South Pacific” someday, it isn’t currently being rescheduled - unlike another postponed Goodspeed musical from this year, “Anne of Green Gables,” which has already been announced as part of the 2022 season. This latest move, according to Goodspeed Musical Marketing Director Dan McMahon, is worse than a postponement. Again, it was the last show to drop off the list. In May the Goodspeed announced that “South Pacific” was being pushed to a fall opening, but hadn’t announced dates or details. Then the same thing happened with “South Pacific” in 2021. “South Pacific” remained on the 2020 schedule for summer, then as a fall event, until it was clear that the Goodspeed could not produce any musicals that year.

The show was just about to begin rehearsals, and sets were already being constructed, just as COVID hit.

After holding onto hope that it could stage a full musical this year, Goodspeed finally removed “South Pacific” after a series of announced postponements that date back to the spring of 2020. The Goodspeed Opera House will string Christmas lights again this year, when it premieres a new musical based on the classic screwball comedy 'Christmas in Connecticut' Nov.
